More details

Set up your bank transfer

To make sure we can send your payment quickly, we need two things from you before your move:

  • A completed W-9 form (scan or snap a photo with your phone)
  • Bank transfer details: A voided check OR your ACH details on your bank’s official letterhead

Note: We can no longer mail checks to your new address due to problems with mailed checks being delayed and even lost in transit.

Take notes

To help us understand your moving experience, please save the following communications with your moving company:

  • Emails. (To save emails in Gmail, go to File > Print > Destination > Save as PDF.)
  • Paperwork and forms. (Scan or snap photos with your smartphone and email them to movinggrants@move.org.)
  • Phone calls. (Please jot down a summary of each call with your mover and email your notes to movinggrants@move.org.)

Take photos

Please take photos with your smartphone to document the move process. Use photos to document the packing stage, interactions with the actual movers, the moving truck or container arriving/departing, and so forth. See the U-Box review for examples.

Here are some best practices for taking photos:

  • Focus on one subject. Don’t try to show the entire moving process in one photo. Instead, keep it simple.
  • Use empty space. It’s okay if up to two-thirds of your photo is empty space—that’ll emphasize what your photo is focusing on.
  • Balance your shot using gridlines. Your camera app has gridlines that can help you follow the rule of thirds.

Prepare for post-move interview

After your move is done, we’ll schedule an interview by phone or Zoom call to ask you detailed questions about your experience:

  1. Why did you choose this moving company?
  2. How did you handle the packing stage?
  3. What packing materials did you use?
  4. Were any items damaged in the move?
  5. Did you get any transit protection coverage?
  6. Did you load all the items yourself or did you hire help? Why?
  7. How long did it take to load your moving truck or container?
  8. What was the process of getting the moving truck or container in front of your home?
  9. Tell us how moving day went.
  10. Tell us about your experience of unpacking and settling into your new home.
  11. Please describe the communication between you and your movers.
  12. How would you rate the customer service of your moving company?
  13. Were there any gaps in communication, delays in communication, or miscommunication during your move? If so, what were they and how were they resolved?
  14. Did you receive any discounts during your move and if so what were they?
  15. If there was a difference between your quote and your final bill, how did the company explain the difference?
  16. If you had to suggest any improvements to your moving company, what would you say? (Ex. scheduling, communication, conflict resolution, value of services you actually received.)
  17. Out of five stars, how would you rate the company you used to move? Would you use them again? Why or why not?
  18. Is there anything you wish you’d known about before your move? If you used our website to help prepare for your move, what do you wish we’d informed you about beforehand?
  19. How did you learn about the moving assistance grant? Did you use any other resources from Move.org to plan your move? If so, which?
