Moving discounts

Senior discounts

The golden years come with plenty of perks, including reduced moving prices. Whether you’re downsizing from your family home or flying south for warmer winters, there are plenty of opportunities to save on relocation costs.

Most moving companies that specialize in helping older adults relocate offer discounted rates, but if you don’t see a discount listed on the company’s website, call and ask.

Beyond general senior discounts, a few companies have deals for membership organizations:

  • Bekins: Offers special pricing to members of the National Association of Senior Move Managers and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.
  • Penske: Gives American Seniors Association members a 10% discount on rental trucks.

AAA discounts

You may think of using AAA when your car breaks down on the highway, but did you know its membership also nets you moving discounts? Here are a few to look for:

  • Penske: AAA members get anywhere from 12% to 30% off truck rentals and moving services.
  • Atlas Van Lines: Move with Atlas and receive free full-value protection (FVP)—a savings of $600.

AARP discounts

Budget Truck Rental: In the 50+ age bracket? You’ll get a discount on Budget moving truck rentals with an AARP membership. Save up to 20% on Sunday–Thursday truck rentals and 10% on weekend reservations with your membership number.

Unfortunately, no other large moving truck companies—Penske and U-Haul—or self-storage companies offer discounts to AARP members.

Union discounts

Budget Truck Rental: Are you a dues-paying labor union member? Then you can save 20% on local and one-way Budget truck and van rentals through Union Plus. The discount is also valid for retired union members who are relocating.

Costco discounts

Budget Truck Rental: A Costco membership is good for more than bulk toilet paper and cheap gas. Costco members save 25% on Budget truck rentals. Start your reservation through Budget’s Costco partnership page, and your member discount code will be automatically applied to your rental.

Off-season discounts

Moving industry data shows that people are much more likely to move during the summer than in any other season. During less busy times of the year, many moving companies offer discounts.

Prices vary based on the company and region, but if you’re moving in the off-season (October–April) or mid-week, you can typically nab a better rate.

Student discounts

A big move isn’t always affordable on a college student’s budget. Some moving companies totally get this and offer student discounts to help ease the financial burden:

  • Penske: Save 10% on moves with a college ID.
  • Budget Truck Rental: Save 20% on local moves and 15% on one-way moves—valid any day of the week—with code TRUCKU.
  • SMARTBOX: Save some cash with discounted storage containers and affordable, all-inclusive summer storage specials that consist of delivery, storage, and re-delivery come fall.

Have your valid student ID ready—you’ll need it to qualify for these deals.

Teacher discounts

Budget Truck Rental: To say thank you for educating the next generation, Budget offers 20% off local moves and 15% off one-way moves to current teachers (use the code TEACH when you reserve your rental).

Law enforcement and first responder discounts

Budget Truck Rental: Police, firefighters, and EMTs receive 20% off local moves and 15% off one-way moves with Budget. This promotion is valid every day of the week—use coupon code SERVI when you book.

For Manhattanites, CubeSmart will provide a free moving truck and a driver at select New York City locations. All you have to do is load and unload the truck!

Mini U Storage: This smaller local storage company offers free moving trucks to new tenants. Since this perk is popular, make a truck reservation as soon as you know your moving date. The first 50 miles are free, and you’ll pay $0.99 per mile after that. Moves between Monday and Thursday get six-hour truck rentals, while on weekends free rentals last for four hours.
