Bottom line: With easy-to-use containers and wallet-friendly pricing, SMARTBOX is a leading moving and storage option for anyone on a tight budget. However, SMARTBOX’s limited availability and sparse insurance options mean the company isn’t right for everyone.

What services does SMARTBOX offer?
The SMARTBOX system is relatively simple: you request one or more containers, they get delivered to your home, you pack them yourself, and SMARTBOX comes back to pick them up.
If you’re moving, your containers are shipped to your destination. If you’re using the units for storage, SMARTBOX will deliver them to one of its secure storage facilities. Alternatively, you can keep the containers on your property for quick and easy access to whatever you’re storing.

SMARTBOX’s pricing depends on seasonality and demand, so your estimate may vary from the prices we got. To get these prices, we submitted a request for delivery within a single ZIP code in Los Angeles, CA. For the long-distance move, we said we were moving from LA to Seattle, WA.

How to get a SMARTBOX estimate
Getting a SMARTBOX quote online is pretty easy. You have to provide your name, phone number, email, and details about your move. You’ll get an instant estimate, which is helpful if you’re shopping around and you want quick answers.
You’ll also get a more detailed quote via email that breaks your estimate down so you know exactly what you’ll be paying for.
One thing that makes SMARTBOX a great option for budget movers is that they offer price matching. If you get a better estimate from another moving and storage company, SMARTBOX will usually try to match it if you show them the other company’s quote.
In addition to your quote, SMARTBOX will send you several follow-up emails. This practice is standard in the industry, so it doesn’t make SMARTBOX worse than competitors, but it’s still something to be aware of.
Long-distance moving prices
The quote SMARTBOX sent us didn’t list the pricing factors for the long-distance move we outlined. Because of this, we don’t know exactly how much SMARTBOX charges per box or per mile for an interstate move.
What we know for sure is that the quoted price includes transportation costs like mileage and gas.
For cross-country movers

Local moving prices
Unlike the long-distance quote, the quote we got for our local move broke the price down per container. For a local move, each container costs $89 (which includes one month of use), and there were two $99 delivery fees for pickup and dropoff.
For three months of storage at a SMARTBOX warehouse, we were quoted $69 per container plus a single $99 delivery cost.
For some reason, SMARTBOX charges a little more if you opt to use the containers for storage on your own property. Three months of on-site storage would cost $89 per unit (plus the same $99 delivery fee).
SMARTBOX’s pricing depends on local supply and demand, seasonality, distance, and several other factors. For this reason, the prices we’ve listed may not reflect the cost of your specific move.
SMARTBOX’s insurance coverage options
SMARTBOX was inconsistent regarding its insurance coverage options. The quote for the long-distance move said that $5,000 of moving protection was included, but customer service representatives told us $10,000 dollars of insurance coverage was included. One of the representatives also said $20,000 of supplemental coverage can be bought for $105, and $30,000 can be bought for $135.
No insurance coverage plans were included in our quotes for the local move, the warehouse storage, or the on-site storage. All three quotes said that additional coverage could be purchased, but we couldn’t track down any details.
These inconsistencies make SMARTBOX less than ideal if you absolutely need good insurance coverage for pricey belongings. If comprehensive coverage is important to you—and you want to work with SMARTBOX for its competitive pricing—we recommend that you ask your customer service representative for concrete documentation of your coverage plan.
SMARTBOX’s cancellation policy allows you to cancel your service, but for a fee in most cases.

Things to know about SMARTBOX
SMARTBOX lets you lock in your quoted price
As we mentioned earlier, SMARTBOX’s prices can change depending on seasonality and supply. If you get your quote in January but you’re not moving until June (peak moving season), you might end up paying a higher price when it’s actually time to move.
To help you avoid this problem, SMARTBOX locks in your quote, so you’re guaranteed your rate won’t go up for thirty days. Then, once you put down your deposit (fifteen percent of the total price), you’re guaranteed that your rate won’t increase for another sixty days. If your initial delivery date is within that sixty day range, you’ll pay what you were originally quoted—not a dollar more.
If you keep your moving containers for more than thirty days, you will be charged for an additional month of use. To avoid this extra cost, be ready to start packing when your containers arrive.
SMARTBOX containers are easy to use
One key feature of SMARTBOX containers is that they sit at (almost) ground level. If you’ve ever carried a sofa or a fridge up a moving truck ramp, you’ll find this design far more convenient. Instead of hauling heavy furniture up a steep incline, you only have to step up a few inches.
Each container features a barn-style door that swings open instead of rolling up inside the unit (like a moving truck door) and taking up valuable storage space. Additionally, SMARTBOX doors are as tall and wide as the units themselves, so you won’t have to work around tricky corners or angles when you’re loading and unloading.
SMARTBOX containers are made of wood, not metal, so they’re not especially durable or weather-resistant. To solve this problem, SMARTBOX provides a waterproof canvas to cover each container.

SMARTBOX container specifications
|Exterior size||8 ft. deep x 7 ft. x 5 ft.|
|Interior size||7 ft. 7 3/4 in. x 6 ft. 5 3/4 in. x 4 ft. 8 in.|
|Storage space||231 cu. ft.|
|Weight limit||3,000 lbs.|
|8 ft. deep x 7 ft. x 5 ft.|
|7 ft. 7 3/4 in. x 6 ft. 5 3/4 in. x 4 ft. 8 in.|
|231 cu. ft.|
A single SMARTBOX container has roughly 231 cubic feet of storage space and a 3,000-pound weight capacity, so one container should be able to hold one entire room’s worth of stuff. If your rooms are small, you might be able to fit even more.
Keep in mind: Large furnishings like sofas and disassembled bunk beds might take up most of the floor space in your container, but that doesn’t mean the container can’t hold more. Stack lighter things like boxes of clothing and books on top of your heavy furniture to maximize efficiency.

SMARTBOX offers multiple storage options
SMARTBOX offers two different kinds of storage: long-term (in a warehouse) and on-site (at your house). Long-term is better if you have stuff you’re sick of looking at but aren’t ready to throw away, while on-site is best for stashing extra furniture and home goods for just a few weeks.
Use SMARTBOX’s long-term storage plan to clear clutter in your home and store sentimental (but little-used) belongings safely. After you’ve packed your containers, SMARTBOX delivers them to a secure warehouse.

If you opt for on-site storage, SMARTBOX will let you keep your containers on your property for a monthly rate. This is a great option if you’re staging your home or need to clean out your spare bedroom for holiday guests.

What we recommend
SMARTBOX is a great option for budget storage and moving—if you live within its service areas. It’s a smaller company with several key drawbacks like wooden containers, unclear coverage options, and a relatively sparse network of outlets.
But even with those limitations, SMARTBOX gets a lot of positive customer reviews for exceptional service.
