Extra Space Storage’s features differ across its locations. If you need a specific feature or storage unit size, call your nearest facility to see if it’s got what you need.

How much does Extra Space Storage cost?

Extra Space Storage typically costs anywhere from $25 to $500 per month depending on the location, the size of the unit, and whether you need a climate-controlled unit. Extra Space Storage’s rates vary based on a number of different factors.

Storage unit size and features

One of the biggest determining factors in your monthly rental rate is the size of your storage unit. A small 5 ft. x 5 ft. unit can cost as little as $25 per month, while a large 20 ft. x 25 ft. storage unit at that same facility could run closer to $300 per month.

Storage features such as climate control or first-floor access can affect your monthly rent as well. Expect to pay a bit more if you opt for a unit with either of these features, regardless of your storage unit size.

Much like any other storage facility, Extra Space Storage’s prices fluctuate from location to location.

For instance, a 10 ft. x 10 ft. climate-controlled unit in Salt Lake City costs $103 per month, whereas the same unit in Harlem costs $345 per month.

Extra Space Storage is still open for business, and the company continues to actively monitor COVID-19 updates and is taking precautionary measures.

Extra Space Storage protects your stuff

When you rent a storage unit, you aren’t just trying to clear out your garage so you can finally park there. You also want to make sure the items you store stay put until you’re finally ready to bring them home (or embrace the inevitable and sell them on eBay).

Extra Space Storage protects your belongings in two ways.

It protects your belongings from theft

Among all of the self-storage companies we reviewed, we were the most impressed with Extra Space Storage’s theft protection measures.

Here’s a look at how it ensures your belongings won’t go missing:

  • Employs on-site managers
  • Maintains fenced and well-lit facilities
  • Features electronic gates with coded access
  • Has monitored video surveillance
  • Offers door alarms for individual storage units
  • Sells high-quality disc locks

While some self-storage companies offer a lot of these security features, very few offer all of them. In fact, Extra Space Storage was the only such company on our best self-storage companies list.

It protects your belongings from damage

Extra Space Storage takes steps to ensure your belongings not only stay put but stay intact too.

Your stored stuff can be damaged by everything from moisture and humidity to Stuart Little and his buddies. Lucky for you, Extra Space Storage has solutions for both of those issues.

You can rent an indoor, climate-controlled unit to protect items that are especially vulnerable to drastic changes in temperature and humidity, like furniture or clothing. Indoor storage also keeps pests at bay more effectively than a standard outdoor storage unit.

Extra Space Storage goes one step further in its pest protection efforts with regular treatments for bugs and rodents.

Rodents and insects can wreak havoc on your belongings in an untreated unit, and a surprisingly large number of companies don’t treat their facilities, so you can take comfort knowing that Extra Space Storage treats its buildings often.

Extra Space storage offers discounted moving truck rentals

If you’re planning on renting anything larger than a 5 ft. x 5 ft. storage unit, you’ll need something with more cargo room than your trusty ol’ hatchback to carry your belongings to the storage facility.

Renting a moving truck is generally your best solution. Although it’s an extra cost, Extra Space Storage can help you minimize that added expense.

Extra Space partners with Budget Truck Rental to save you up to 20% on your rental truck when you rent a storage unit. We think this is actually a pretty compelling perk considering this deal is on par with discounts Budget offers military members, students, and other select groups.1

Budget Truck Rental ranks highly on our best moving truck rental company list, so landing a discount with them makes a good experience even better.

Extra Space Storage offers a large variety of storage sizes

One of the biggest deciding factors in selecting a self-storage unit is finding a facility with a unit that’s not too big, not too small, but just right (Goldilocks was onto something).

Extra Space Storage has facilities in 38 states and offers everything from small, closet-sized storage units to units large enough to fit that hatchback.

Pro tip

Pro tip

Keep your eye out for odd sizes and you might be able to find a deal!

Some unique storage sizes offer virtually the same amount of space as common sizes for less money. For instance, we found a 10 ft. x 14 ft. climate-controlled unit that costs $6 less per month than its standard 10 ft. x 15 ft. counterpart.

Our recommendation

Extra Space Storage is the best self-storage company if your highest priority is safety and security. In fact, that’s one of the main reasons it earned a spot on our Best Self-Storage Companies list. Security isn’t the only reason it stands out, however:

  • It protects your belongings from both theft and pests.
  • It partners with Budget to provide discounted moving truck rentals.
  • It has more than enough storage options to fit your needs.

Overall, we think Extra Space Storage is your best bet if you live near one of its facilities. Heck, even if there’s another self-storage company between you and the nearest Extra Space location, we think it’s worth driving the extra mile or two.

I would give them no stars if I could absolutely the worst experience after multiple rebrandings of the business. The newest one is Extra Space Storage same bullshit in the same spot. After finding out that all my clothes were damaged because somebody decided to smoke marijuana around the area and shut off the sprinkler systems I get told I’m only covered for $2,000 in addition to that I asked what am I supposed to do Waze all the damage clothes this little West Indian girl who works there tells me I have to take it with me I told her there is no space in my car and then tells me that I have to figure it out then I asked her as a courtesy they should take it since I just took a lost that as a courtesy they should take the destroyed items with them she replied by saying that they will not and if I leave it there and they’re going to charge me a clean-up fee the how you going to charge me a clean-up fee when my items were destroyed in your care I don’t understand how that even make sense at least have the decency to at least take care of that. Her nonchalant attitude it’s really what ticked me off she was not supposed Vedic or empathetic to the situation as I drove all the way from Jersey to go pick up some suits for work and I lost everything the other employees that were there one more sympathetic to the situation needless to say I’m done with this place

Most of the reviews for the facility at 750 E Sample Rd, Pompano Beach, FL are FAKE. STAY AWAY! You WILL regret it!

We’ve been here for over 5 years now, and this used to be a great storage facility when it was Storage Post, with friendly and helpful staff.

But 2 months ago this facility was acquired by Extra Space Storage, and the reviews were imported from the previous owner. Now the staff is completely unhelpful, unable to accommodate any simple request. The manager seems to be always in a horrible mood and takes it out on anyone.

Do not rent from Extra Space Storage in Buford, GA on Nelson Brogden Blvd. They were good at first then they increased my rent by $20. Then before I moved out I called to find out the process. They said I can move out anytime and they would prorate my last month. After I moved out they said that I can not have a refund on the remainder of my last month. RIP-OFF!!

  • Lee Drex

Extra space storage on oak tree rd in Edison nj is unscrupulous!! After 4 months they doubled my rent!! Forcing me to find someplace else to store my things, I told them when I was leaving and told them I wouldn’t authorize anymore auto payments, I had to pay for 1 extra day, I moved my stuff out as agreed on 9/28/19 only to discover they’re attempting to steal an October payment from me! Now I have to dispute the charge!! Save yourself a lot of stress and avoid this evil place!!!

I’ll tell you something about some Extra Space Storage you might not know. If its 115 degrees in your unit can you plug a fan in one of their exterior plugs the Corunna and beat you out make you unplug it. If it’s night time and you’re trying to store your stuff in your unit and you plug in a light they are going to tell you to unplug it. The lady managing this facility that lives above the office, is on a power trip bigger than the Hulk. I think it’s a little bit appropriate for me to have a light so I can see. Considering it’s an LED light, and cost about $4 a month if you run a 24 hours a day. What really gets me is that telling me to turn my fan off when it was a hundred twelve hundred fifteen degrees in my unit…. what if I pass out from dehydration while my head or if I just totally stroke out leave my kids fatherless because they didn’t want to pay $4 for the month for my fan to run all day everyday??? I was only going to run it for a couple hours. It’s ridiculous how these big corporate outfits have no compassion or want to help the customer anymore. You’re not buying a lock or f****** $8 box or a f****** $12 roll of tape they don’t want nothing to do with you. She keeps telling me that I’ve been here too long a time I spend too much time here. I’m like hey I’ve only been running the place for 10 days 11 days. I like to straighten my stuff out have a nice and organized. Sides that why do you have 24-hour access if I’m not allowed to use it. And what if I’m OCD real bad in my unit has to be perfect. Is she allowed to tell me that I’m not supposed to be OCD????? I mean..who in the Fuck do these people think they are???? Hey Owner…yeah.. you.. Rich Asshole… climb down off of your Yacht for a f****** week and go around and help some of these people fix their problems that they’re having with his sorry ass f****** managers. Get off your ass and become worthy of your position. Amen

I have rented a unit in Richmond, Va on a few different occasions. The current unit that I have is one I’ve rented for over 3 years. I have had my rent jacked up without warning and I have had them threaten me with auctioning off my unit over being a few days behind. This most recent issue has been with the management and customer service not being willing to work with me on payments. I will totally admit that I am at this point 2 months behind due to circumstances unforeseen and beyond my control. I suffered a TBI or traumatic brain injury where until recently I was barely able to do anything on my own including being out of work for months. I have tried very hard to keep up with all of the payments but that became almost impossible with no income coming in. I’m beyond disappointed and pissed with the way that this company refuses to allow me to make partial payments in order to bring everything current and access my stuff. I’m posting this to let people know the type of company they are. I understand that they run a business but apparently money is more important to them than customer service, I have to say that’s very sad on their part. Because of this whole incident I am about to lose almost everything I own including some very important sentimental items. This is not a way to run a business and I would never recommend them to anyone. And apparently this is not usual with this company. So I strongly advise
anyone looking to rent with them to read all the reviews on all social media outlets before considering giving them your business. And I hope this never happens to anyone else.

    • PrinceHarming

Sadly .. the problem with ‘customer service’ .. is that you have to be a Customer. If you’re not paying for the service then you are no longer a customer. And yes.. it seems a shame that they can’t cut you some slack – businesses used to do it all the time..But we live in a different time now. When you consider that Everyone has a hard luck story at least once in their lives. the company must still decide: Are they going to function like a for profit enterprise – or like the American Red Cross? Would you be as harsh with a review for Kroger or Publix if they weren’t helping to supplement your groceries for a few months?
It’s tough.. but it’s also business. The main question in any review like this is “Has the company made promises or assertions that it has not lived up to?” That would be important for readers to know. And secondly, “Which of the two parties in this relationship has been the one to not live up to it’s promises?’ Best of luck to you.

Tell ya what, Prince. I AM a customer, faithfully paying each month on time. Their practice is to raise rates, as often as possible, knowing the only recourse a customer has is the inconvenience and cost of moving out. I’ve spoken to their management, and was essentially told pay or leave, they have more people waiting.

  • Jack Whitechapel

Their entire business model is to raise rates, with little warning, multiple times each year, twice for me personally since April 2019. I went from paying (before tax) $188 to $220 for a 10×15 that currently is offered online for $157. Their management in Lake Mary Florida has claimed the rate increases are for property improvements, yet there have been no changes to security, the gate, access, or even overall conditions (which are good) in years. Edit: they may have added/changed the plants, bushes and some trees out front, I’m not sure.

The facility is secure, and I have had no issues with the climate controlled unit not keeping my belongings safe and sound.

It’s a great facility, as long as you don’t object to slumlord inspired rental rates and increases.

  • Tami Garcia-Tafolla

If you like your rent going up constantly without fail, rent from Extra Space Storage. Colin and Move must be getting paid to recommend this company.
